Adventures with cousin Sarah's Flat Stanley

Stanley visits Charleston, South Carolina

Flat Stanley was so excited when he arrived in Charleston.  He was greeted by Lilly, the friendly pup.  Stanley and Lilly immediately became pals.  He really enjoyed riding around the house on Lilly's back.

After a stroll around the house, Stanley settled in to watch some American football.  He wondered why they were throwing the ball and what all the tackling was for on the field. That's not how football is played in France!

Later that evening, Stanley found the perfect place for him to travel in while visiting, baby Colin's diaper bag.  It was just the right size for Stanley and since he is so flat he fit very nicely.

The next day was Sunday so we headed to downtown Charleston for church at the Catholic cathedral.  Stanley really enjoyed the music and thought the church was beautiful.
He also got to see up-close one of the beautiful iron gates which are popular around the city.

After church, Stanley got to take a tour of all the interesting sites in Charleston.  He thought it was really cool how many of the houses have a porch on the side where guests enter.  He couldn't believe how big the houses were along the Battery especially the pink one.  Stanley was excited to find an American flag on one of the homes.

The sunset was beautiful and Stanley enjoyed watching along the water with the sailboats in the distance.

School was back in session on Monday so Stanley stopped by an American classroom.  While there, Stanley got to learn about the Native Americans who lived on this continent long ago.

He was very impressed with everything the students were learning and enjoyed using the SMART board which was like a giant computer screen he could move with his hands!

Later that week, Stanley went to lunch at a Chinese restaurant called PF Changs.  He really enjoyed his meal but the best part was the fortune cookie at the end!
Stanley's fortune read, "Big journeys begin with a single step."  He thought that was the perfect fortune for him since he was on such a big journey to America.

Stanley's favorite part of his whole trip was when he got to ride on a C-17 airplane with Uncle Tim.
All the controls were amazing to him.  He wanted to know what every button did. Since it was a night flight, Stanley got to stay up extra late.

Stanley had a lot of fun while he was in Charleston.  He spent one afternoon at a local park and another one at the beach.  Stanley did a great job swinging even though it made his stomach turn upside down.

While at the Isle of Palms beach, Stanley played in the sand and found lots of seashells.

Stanley had never been to a real pumpkin patch before so we had to take him.  While there he picked out his very own pumpkin.

He also got to pretend to be a scarecrow and ride on a tractor.

Flat Stanley's last big adventure in Charleston was to walk over the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge.  He was ready for the challenge!

As soon as we got on the bridge, three C-17 airplanes flew over us.  This is the same plane Stanley got to fly in so he was ecstatic!  He also got to see a C-5 that flew over us.  This airplane is the largest in the entire United States Air Force!

While on the bridge Stanley also got to see Fort Sumter (where the United States Civil War began), the USS Yorktown (an old Navy ship), a cruise boat, and downtown Charleston.

Baby Colin joined Stanley on the walk and slept for most of the time!

We got pretty hot walking the bridge so we stopped off at Menchie's for some frozen yogurt on the way home.
Aunt Jackie shared her bowl with Stanley.  We got strawberry and vanilla yogurt with coconut, pineapples, and chocolate chips as the toppings.

The last thing Flat Stanley got to do with us was celebrate Halloween by dressing up. Lilly dressed up as a bumble bee.
Stanley wanted to look just like baby Colin so we made him his very own lion costume.  ROAR!

We will miss you Stanley!

Love, The Goodwillies
Uncle Tim, Aunt Jackie, baby Colin and Lilly too!
